A new USB speed boost is around the corner. Following the release of next-generation specs, your next USB cable might offer substantially quicker speeds and better performance.

According to the organization that developed the technology, USB Type-C cables and connectors will be replaced by USB 4 version 2.0. This will deliver data performance that is expected to be twice as fast.

The new technology should offer significantly faster connectivity and data transfer rates. It is scheduled to go on sale later in 2022. What’s more, you might not even need to spend money on new cables in order to benefit from the improvement in performance.

USB speed boost: 2.0 version 4

The USB Promoter Group unveiled the developments. They are feasible by a new physical layer architecture that supports up to 80 GB/second operation. Even while using older USB-C passive connections that could only provide 40 GB/second speeds.

This implies that a 40GBps cable purchased today will soon be able to deliver twice these speeds without any further user effort.

To allow greater levels of performance, the USB-C and USB Power Delivery (PD) specifications will be modified. The protocols will also be backward-compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and USB 4 versions 1.0, 3.2, and 2.0. Additionally, enhanced data tunneling will be used to maximize bandwidth with improved support for DisplayPort and PCIe.

According to the USB Promoter Group, USB 4 version 2.0 should be a substantial advancement for both manufacturers and users.

According to USB Promoter Group Chairman Brad Saunders, “This new USB4 specification continues USB history by doubling data performance to give higher levels of capability to the USB Type-C ecosystem.”

“Solutions seeing the most benefit from this speed enhancement include higher-performance displays, storage, and USB-based hubs and docks.”
